History

In the year 2014, Sabrina, a final-year student midwife, went to the West African country of Gambia for her last internship. In the small village of Gunjur she lived and worked for three months in the Health Center. She became very in touch with the local population during this period.
In preparation for this international internship, she asked herself what she could possibly do for the local population. She brainstormed about this with her teacher. This is how the very first collection campaign for baby clothes and medical material started. This campaign was very successfull: Together with her classmates, they collected more than € 1 2,500 in babyclothes and materials. DHL sent this for the students free of charge to Banjul, the capital of The Gambia. During her volunteering work in the labour ward, she donated a set of baby clothes to each new mother and baby, and the medical equipment was used to protect mother, child and healthcare worker.
She graduated with Distinction in 2014. The love for development aid in Africa remained, and in 2015 Sabrina went to Gunjur again to volunteer. And again the following year ... She wanted to do more ... Sabrina went looking for co-motivated people, and finally the de facto foundation ' MAMAFRIKA'  was born in the spring of 2019  (now named Gambiana).

It is hope that led me to volunteer and development work. But it is love that keeps me going.

Vision and values

The foundation ' GAMBIANA' is a Belgian non-profit association, founded in 2019.
The global goal of our organization is to provide better and safe care for mothers and children in Africa, as well as support the local population and entrepreneurs . We are active in the OECD country Gambia in West Africa.

VZW Mamafrika is a Citizens' Initiative for Development Cooperation , a so-called Fourth Pillar organization with legal personality. We are completely dependent on donations that we receive. All funds, services and collected products go entirely to our global goal. Every year (financial) reports appear on our website. Everything we do is therefore verifiable.

Through our organization we want to contribute to the Global Sustainable Development Goals,
also known by the name " Sustainable Development goals"  or short the SDGs . These global goals were set and approved by the United Nations in 2015. Over the next 15 years, action plans must be formed within the 17 SDGs to free humanity from poverty and put the planet back on its course towards sustainability.
The objectives we focus on as an organization are:
  • No poverty (SDG 1)
  • No hunger (SDG 2)
  • Good health and well-being (SDG 3)
  • Quality education for every child (SDG 4)
  • Forming partnerships to achieve these goals (SDG 17)
